Christmas 2002: December 30

Laundry day at last. After another look at the phone book we decided to change our plans and go downtown first thing in the morning. The laundromat there looked a bit more promising (from what it said in the phone book), and we wanted to be there anyway so we could see some of the city once we were done. Once we made it there, doing the laundry was pretty straightforward.

After we were done, we stuck the luggage in a locker at the train station and walked around a bit. The main section of town was quite crowded. There were lots of stores, and a few interesting buildings. But on the whole we decided we hadn't missed much. We had Mexican food for lunch, and then headed back to the train station to catch our train to Salzburg, Austria.

Upon arriving in Salzburg we were delighted to learn that we planned one of our hotels right: the hotel was just across the street from the train station. After we settled in we went for a walk along the river. We had read about a special Salzburg dessert: Salzburger Nockerl. We stopped into a cafe and tried one for dessert. It's a big soufflé. Picture a lemon meringue pie, and then get rid of the lemon and the pie. It tastes sort of like a scrambled egg flavored cotton candy. There was a fruit sauce, but not enough of it. I think we got about a month's worth of eggs in one sitting.
