We left first thing in the morning to Koblenz and then on to Cologne
(Köln in German). The train to Koblenz was along the river, and we
were able to follow our guide book to see the various things to see as
we went. That was nice.
Once we got to Köln we had to find our hotel. It turned out to be
a 20 minute walk from the train station. Then once we got there we had
to lug the luggage up and down a couple flights of stairs to get to our
room. My arms were getting tired, but we made it.
We walked back towards the train station, because the big "Dom
Church" is right outside the station. The church was quite fancy,
and we enjoyed walking around inside. Not somewhere we would actually
want to attend regularly though. You could also go up to see the bell
tower, but Sara thought it would be too many steps for her, so we
skipped that.
Sara had read about a chocolate museum in Köln, so we headed
towards that next. It started raining, and Sara had left her umbrella
at the hotel, so we bought another cheap one. I told her it was the
last one we were buying on this trip. We had general directions to the
museum, but didn't know exactly where it was. It took longer than we
expected to get to where we thought it was, and then we couldn't find
it. By this point it was raining pretty hard and it was pretty windy
and the umbrella broke in the wind. So we gave up on the museum and
went back to the hotel. We rested for a bit, and then found an Italian
place for dinner. It wasn't that great. We tried to find somewhere else
to go for dessert, but all of the bakeries and shops were closed by
8:00 PM, so we didn't end up finding anything.
So our day in Köln wasn't that great. The church was nice, but
probably not worth the trip out there just for that.
