Christmas 2002: December 20

Frankfurt Market Square
(larger)
Today we went to the Christmas markets in Frankfurt. These are pretty common in Germany -- in many towns they have booths set up during December to sell all sorts of things: food, decorations, toys, candles, and more.

The Christmas market in Frankfurt is quite large -- probably at least 200 booths across several streets. Every time we thought we were just about to the end we would turn a corner and find another large section. We didn't actually buy much, but we enjoyed looking.

It was rather cold -- just above freezing -- so every so often we would pop into one of the stores to get warm and look around. The stores were pretty typical for what we've seen in Sweden or even back home in the U.S. There were even some American clothes, although they were pretty expensive.

For lunch we had cheese bread from one of the booths, and some very good meat on a bun from another one. (They called it steak, but it wasn't like steak that we are used to.) For dinner we ate at an Italian restaurant just a block or two away from our hotel. The waitress had a bit of trouble with English, but the food was excellent.
