We spent Christmas 2002 in Germany, and
finished our trip by spending New Years in Salzburg, Austria. The pages
ahead include a day-by-day description of the trip along with lots of
pictures. You can click on any of the pictures to see a larger version.
But first, a brief overview of the trip.
We got to Salzburg the evening of Monday,
December 30. Salzburg is famous for two things: it's the
birthplace of Mozart, and it's where the movie "Sound of
Music" was filmed. We started our day on
Tuesday (New Year's Eve) by going on
a Sound of Music tour, which was decent but might have been more
meaningful if I had seen the movie recently. Part of the tour included
a bus ride out of the city, so we got to see some of the scenery. There
were lots of fireworks for New Year's, mostly supplied by the hoardes
of people rather than by the city. We spent the next two days seeing the
sights of the city. It's a big tourist town, and there are lots of
museums and things to see. It was busy, but we enjoyed it.
We took an overnight train back to Sweden, and arrived back on
Friday, January 3. January 6 is a
holiday in Sweden, so we had a 3 day weekend to recover, and then a
short 4 day week. So it was a nice slow reintroduction to real life.
